GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Duration of Course:
This is a 6 month course which includes 40 hours of theory,
application of learning in clinical settings and assessment
of. competencies achieved.
2. Selection Criteria:
i. Division 2 nurses registered with the Nurses Board of
Victoria
ii. 2 professional references and an appropriate level of
clinical experience in a health care setting
3. Clinical Application:
Participants are expected to apply their learning throughout
the course by working an average of 2 shifts per week In a
mental health facility or health service which caters for
people with secondary mental Illness
i. As a member of Swingshift Nurses or
ii. In a mental health facility In which the participant is
employed
4. Course Content:
There are 3 components to the course:
- 10 x 4 hour theory sessions
- clinical application with work based exercises
- ongoing assessment of competency
Theory is present In 10 x 4 hour education sessions which
Include mint lectures, supervised skills practice,
discussion, small group work, and individual exercises
Theory and clinical practice will Include development of the
following areas:
basic knowledge of the symptoms of major mental Illnesses
including schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder,
personality disorder and dementia
an understanding of mental status assessment and the ability
to make observations of a patient using this
ability to identify and demonstrate active listening skills
with people experiencing symptoms of major mental illness
ability to contribute to the therapeutic management of
people who are psychotic, depressed, manic, aggressive,
anxious or confused.
ability to contribute to the development, implementation and
review of nursing care plans for mentally ill people
ability to observe the legal rights of the person requiring
mental health care
5. Assessment
An accredited assessor will establish development of
competencies by each participant throughout the 6 months.
Assessment takes place In a non threatening adult learning
environment with the focus on development and learning.
6. Criteria to be met for a certificate:
A certificate will be awarded when theory is completed and
units of competency are assessed as successfully achieved |
