ARE THERE ANY LANGUAGE
COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS?
In Australia English is the language of communication in
health care settings therefore it is essential that nurses have a
level of proficiency in English which enables them to communicate
competently and safely with clients and colleagues.
In accordance with ANC Policy the requirement to complete an
English language proficiency test is waived where a nurses
education leading to registration was undertaken in Australia, United
Kingdom, Ireland, USA, South Africa or Zimbabwe.
The requirement to complete an English language proficiency test
for nurses from Canada is waived provided the nurses initial
nursing education has been completed in Canada, the nurse has
gained registration in Canada through examination and that
examination was in English.
All other nurses are required to successfully complete one of
the following English Language Tests: |
| |
1. Occupational
English Test (OET) for Nurses
The required pass level is a B pass or above in all four
sections of the test, giving an overall pass.
2. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Academic Test.
The required pass level is a score of not less than 6.5 in
each of the four sections of the test with an overall score
of not less than 7. |
|
| |
|
The test must have been undertaken not
more than two years before lodging the application for assessment.
Original copies of the results of the test should be forwarded to
ANC by the organisation that conducted the test. The results of
the test must be forwarded to ANC prior to completion of the
assessment. |

Will I be required to undertake a
Competency Based Assessment Program/Migrant Bridging Program?
|
It is a requirement for
registration in Australia that nurses must possess and demonstrate
the National Nursing
Competency Standards.
Overseas Nurses must also be able to demonstrate the national
nursing competency standards in order to be eligible for
registration in Australia. In order to do this overseas nurses
will be required to complete a "Competency Based Assessment
Program" (also known as a Migrant Bridging Program). These courses
must be completed either all or in part in Australia.
Successful completion of the program leads to registration with
the Australian nurse regulatory authority in the state or
territory where the program was undertaken.
The requirement to complete a competency based assessment
program/migrant bridging program may be waived for nurses from
countries where: |
| |
- The initial
education program leading to registration is recognised as
equivalent to those in Australia by the Australian nurse
regulatory authorities, and
- sufficient numbers of nurses have been able to demonstrate
competence continuously to enable the Australian nurse
regulatory authorities to determine that all nurses who have
completed their initial education in those countries, are
able to demonstrate the national competency standards. |
|
| |
These include the United Kingdom,
Ireland, United States of America, South Africa, Canada,*
Singapore,* Hong Kong* and nurses from the Netherlands* who have
completed a nursing program leading to HBO qualifications.
*Proof of English language competence is required. |
